The US-Asia Institute joins the global community in celebrating the life of former U.S. Senator Daniel Akaka, who recently passed away in Hawaii at the age of 93. The highest ranking Native Hawaiian in elected office, Akaka was noted for embodying the “aloha” spirit, and will be remembered for his humility, warmth and respect, and for fostering collaboration.
Senator Akaka was a long-time friend to the US-Asia Institute, attending and supporting many events and programs through the years. He spoke at USAI’s celebration of 50 trips to China in 2003, and was recognized at the Institute’s 25th Anniversary National Leadership Conference, receiving the US-Asia Institute Distinguished Strategic Partner Award. He was USAI’s Guest of Honor at its 2012 Lunar New Year celebration.
We extend our condolences to Senator Akaka’s family and commend his lifetime of commitment to international diplomacy and the struggle for social justice.
