Last December, Japan elected its seventh Prime Minister in six years –a virtual revolving door in electoral politics. On March 13, 2013 at the US-Asia Institute in Washington, DC, top Japanese political scientist Dr. Aiji Tanaka of Waseda University in Japan provided insight into Japan’s electoral politics, examining why these rapid changes occurred, analyzing the electoral fragility of the major political parties in Japan, the policy and political ramifications of a divided government, and the outlook for the future. This was the first briefing in a newly established collaboration between the U.S.-Japan Research Institute and the US-Asia Institute.
